General Description

Somerset Court main building
(from a painting by Ann Lovell)

Somerset Court comprises six houses where residents live in small peer groups of four to eight people. The aim is to make life for residents as much as possible like living in their own home and each day going out to their place of work, as well as enjoying planned positive leisure activities together.

Within the grounds are five day service centres offering special skill training in horticulture, woodwork, communication, creative arts and socialising.

The day activities provide a therapeutic and constructive use of time, and encourage independence, self confidence and personal skill development in individual and social functioning. The specific barriers which inhibit full participation in society are challenged in the specialised activities and houses, with staff who are aware of the benefits of providing a standard frame work, are positive, have empathy, understand and implement low arousal techniques and help each resident form productive links with the community.
